Why are we having this event? The Arc of Indiana County and the many providers in the Community Disability Awareness Workgroup are proud to present the Indiana Meet & Greet with first responders, law enforcement, EMS, fire departments, and individuals with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays to strengthen safety, understanding, and trust between the disability community and emergency professionals. This event is designed with the potential to save lives by creating opportunities for meaningful connections before an emergency occurs.

By bringing together individuals with disabilities, families, caregivers, and staff alongside first responders, the Meet & Greet fosters positive relationships, increases awareness, and builds mutual understanding. These interactions help reduce fear and misunderstanding that can lead to negative outcomes during emergencies or high-anxiety situations.

The event also encourages hands-on learning and exposure for both communities. Participants can become familiar with the sights, sounds, movements, and equipment used by emergency personnel, helping individuals better understand what to expect in a crisis. Likewise, first responders gain insight into the unique needs and communication styles of individuals with disabilities, better preparing them for real-world interactions
